Unit Operation Laboratory

The Unit Operation Laboratory is a teaching and learning laboratory for undergraduates in the Department of Chemical Engineering. This laboratory also used by Final Year Project (FYP) Student and Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students who is doing the simulation for their Research Project.

List of major equipment used in Unit Operation Laboratory:

1. Heat Exchanger Training Apparatus, HE158-A, SOLTEQ


Heat Exchanger Training Apparatus has been designed to allow students to get familiarized with different kinds of heat exchangers and to collect the necessary experimental data for the calculation of heat losses, heat transfer coefficient, log mean temperature difference.

2. pH Control Trainers, SE405, SOLTEQ


pH Control Trainer has been designed for student experiments on the measurement and control of pH using buffer solution, alkali and acid are fed into the mixing vessels. pH sensor used to measure the pH and pH controller use to control the pH using dosing pump.

3. Process Control Simulator, SE201, SOLTEQ 


Process Control Simulator is designed to demonstrates and provides the student a hands on experience on control techniques. The Process Control Simulator consists of three element which is the fan, heating element and shutter where all these three element can be manipulate to obtain different output. This simulator also consists three types of control circuits which are, temperature control, flow control and cascade control.

4. Gas Absorption Unit, BP50-80G, SOLTEQ


Gas absorption is a unit operation in which soluble components of a gas mixture are dissolved in a liquid phase. The inverse operation, called stripping or desorption, is employed when it is desired to transfer volatile components from a liquid mixture into a gas phase. Both absorption and desorption processes, common to distillation, make use of special equipment for bringing gas and liquid phase into intimate contact.

5. Vapour Liquid Equilibrium Unit, BP16, SOLTEQ


This unit can be used to study a condition where the liquid and its vapor are in equilibrium to each other. A condition or state where the rate of evaporation equal to the rates of condensation on a molecular level at such that there is no net(overall) vapor-liquid interconvention.
