Mechanical Engineering

The Mechanical Engineering Department and its staff have close ties with the community and industry to offer practice-related education, preparing our students for a successful and rewarding career. The Mechanical Engineering Department aspires to be nationally and internationally recognized as a leader in Mechanical Engineering education, research and services.  The department is also dedicated to the enhancement of teaching and research and pursuit of excellence and innovative applications of technology as contribution to the advancement of scientific knowledge, understanding and community relevance in the region.

In Curtin University Sarawak Campus, we have several labs that allow students to work on different experiments.

1. The Mechanics and Materials Laboratory

The purpose for this lab is to demonstrate phenomena related to stress , strain, buckling and fatigue.
 

2. The Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics Laboratory

This lab looks at the principles of fluid mechanics and hydraulics and the experiments cover fluid properties, hydro-statics and pressure measurement, velocity and flow measurement, orifices, venturi meters and weirs in addition to flow in open channels and pumps.
 

3. Mechanical Engineering Workshop

It is a place where students acquire knowledge on the operation of various processes involved in manufacturing and production. The Workshop Practice course makes students competent in handling practical work in engineering environment. 
 

4. Heat Transfer Laboratory

It is used by the students to study the movement of thermal energy from one thing to another thing of different temperature. This object could be two solids, a solid and a liquid or gas, or even within a liquid or gas.
 

5. Structure and Statics Laboratory

It is a place where the students can study about the non-moving bodies under known loads and how forces affect static bodies. They also will learn to examining the cause of objects fail and to fix back the objects and their performance.
 

6. Turbulence and Energy Research Laboratory

This lab focuses on the study of the effect of turbulence to energy.

1. Leadwell V30 CNC Milling Machine

CNC Milling Machine
General description: 
  • 3-axis milling machine
  • Spindle running at 7.5 horsepower with 8000 top rpm

Usage: 

  • Used for surface milling on a flat surface material
  • Able to perform complex milling operation with high precision
  • Used to machine the work-pieces, allowing easy changes to the machining parameters for the different tests

2. Mini Lathe Machine

Mini Lathe Machine

General description:

  • Gab bed type
  • Spindle top speed 2000rpm
  • 3-chuck type

Usage:

  • Used for cylindrical type of material
  • Screw threading and drilling

3. Sunlike Vertical Turret Milling Machine

Milling Machine

General description:

  • Vertical milling machine type
  • Manual with no servo for feed control

Usage:

  • Usually used to machine flat surfaces, but can also produce irregular surfaces. They can also be used to drill, bore, cut gears, and produce slots
