Visit to Shell Sarawak Well Simulator Lab

Miri – 13 November 2014 – Petroleum Engineering students who enrolled in Drilling Engineering Fundamentals unit went to the Shell Sarawak Headquarter here in Lutong for a short visit to experience the state-of-the-art Well Simulator and Control.

The well simulator includes a very high quality drilling simulation and control system where the operator can do a very good practice to see how drilling can be done and what kinds of measures need to be taken into consideration to detect the blowout and pressure on the cable. Well intervention units consist of a large CWI equipment required to do the acidizing and borehole cleaning as well as the controlling of the BOPs to monitor the activities on the rig site.

According to Dr. Raoof Gholami, Lecturer in the Petroleum Engineering Department, who accompanied the students, “having these kinds of trips for the students to really touch what is going on during the drilling and intervention will be very useful to enhance their understanding of what we are presenting in the class”. Associate Professor Dr. Sharul Sham, Head of Petroleum Engineering Department, would like to applaud the roles of Shell Sarawak and he believes the impact of such training will increase the learning experience of the Petroleum Engineering students at Curtin University Sarawak.
