Curtin Malaysia among finalists for IChemE Malaysia Awards 2018

Miri – 6 August 2018 – Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) has been announced as a finalist in the Student Chapter category for The Institution of Chemical Engineers Malaysia Awards 2018.

The Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) Malaysia recently announced the 2018 finalists in various categories, with a total of 38 entries standing to win trophies for excellence in chemical and process engineering. The winners will be presented with their prizes on 15 October 2018 at the InterContinental Hotel in Kuala Lumpur.

The Student Chapter Award, which recognises significant achievements by chemical engineering students in Malaysia, is a new category being introduced for the first time this year.

The Student Chapter initiative was introduced to provide a platform for universities in Malaysia to promote the latest developments in the profession amongst chemical engineering students and provide professional networking opportunities.

Curtin Malaysia, Heriot-Watt University Malaysia, Monash University Malaysia, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) all feature as finalists in the category recognising the achievements of student chapter projects or teams.

Winners of the IChemE Malaysia Awards will be automatically entered into corresponding categories at the IChemE Global Awards to be held in Manchester, United Kingdom on 1 November 2018. Winners of the Global Awards are eligible for the overall Award for Outstanding Achievement in Chemical and Process Engineering.

Curtin Malaysia Pro Vice-Chancellor, President and Chief Executive Professor Jim Mienczakowski said that an IChemE Student Chapter Award would be a welcome addition to the best student chapter awards the university has already won internationally, including the Society of Petroleum Engineer’s (SPE) Gold Standard Student Chapter Award in 2014 and 2016.

Curtin Malaysia also won the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers’ (IEEE) Region 10 Larry K. Wilson Exemplary Student Branch Award in 2014 and Outstanding Student Branch Award in 2016.

“We have a very dynamic engineering and science community, and have proven time and time again the innovation and excellence that is very prevalent in our teaching and research through the awards we have won,” he said.

Curtin Malaysia famously won the IChemE, United Kingdom’s prestigious McNab Medal for Excellence in Design in 2007, being the first and only Malaysian university to do so. In 2014, Curtin Malaysia was conferred IChemE Malaysia’s Award for Innovation and Excellence.

Chemical engineering at Curtin Malaysia extends beyond its chemical engineering programme as chemical engineering elements are also to be found in its petroleum engineering and environmental engineering programmes.

Curtin Malaysia has the distinction of being the only university in East Malaysia to be recognised with a Tier 5: Excellent rating in the D-SETARA rating system for its engineering programmes.

Globally, Curtin University is ranked as a top 50 university for chemical engineering in ShanghaiRanking’s Global Rankings of Academic Subjects 2018 and top 100 in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2018-19.

In the institutional rankings, it is ranked in the top one per cent of universities in the world in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2017.
