Mechanical Engineering

Welcome to the Department of Mechanical Engineering!

Mechanical Engineering, perhaps the most diverse and versatile among all the engineering disciplines, is the study of the systems or objects in motion. Inherently, the discipline touches almost every aspect of modern day life starting from automobiles, power plants, aircraft, mobile phones, biomedical devices and so on. The students graduated in Mechanical Engineering play key roles in wide range of industries starting from aerospace, oil and gas, energy generation, automotive, shipping, manufacturing & construction, design, biotechnology, mechatronics, robotics, computer, automation, modern day electromechanical systems etc. It’s not only about the engineering, mechanical engineering graduates also successfully handling the economic issues, sales, engineering and corporate management positions. In a nutshell, the mechanical engineering graduates are educated and positioned, not only to adapt in an engineering practice, but to define and direct the prospective changes.

The Mechanical Engineering Department in Curtin University Malasysia strives for excellence in teaching and learning, innovative research, and community service. We are fortunate to have modern facilities and dedicated technical staffs to support our academic programs and research. Funding for research comes from both government and industry. The department and its staffs have close ties with the community and industry to offer practice-related education, preparing our students for a successful and rewarding career. The Mechanical Engineering Department aspires to be nationally and internationally recognized as a leader in Mechanical Engineering education, research and services. The department is also dedicated to the enhancement of teaching and research and pursuit of excellence and innovative applications of technology as contribution to the advancement of scientific knowledge, understanding and community relevance in the region. A number of competitive research grants from Government and Industries have been secured by our staffs. Several national and international research collaborations have been established with industries and academic institutions.

The breadth of the discipline provides the mechanical engineering students a variety of career options beyond the above mentioned opportunities. Irrespective of the precise career they envisage for themselves, the 4 years honours course in mechanical engineering education empowers students with creative thinking skills to design an exciting system or product; training on analytical tools to achieve their design ambitions; the capability to overcome all constraints; and the teamwork skills needed to design, develop and market a system. These valuable skills learned can be applied to launch careers in many other fields to start up and entrepreneurship.

The department also offers Post-Graduate courses: Masters of Philosophy (by Research) in Mechanical Engineering and Doctor of Philosophy in Mechanical Engineering, in addition to the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Mechanical Engineering.

Apart from study and research, Miri is an attractive coastal city to live and work with almost no pollution and clean road management system. It is positioned in northwest coast of the island of Borneo. The local people are very friendly and polite in nature. Our staffs and students come from different parts of the world. To study in this international environment is a rewarding experience.

Our Mechanical Engineering course is fully accredited by Board of Engineers Malaysia and Engineers Australia, who are the authorized signatory of the Washington Accord.
