Thin section preparation is a laboratory skill, taught to students undergoing their Final Year Project. The equipment used is the Ingram-Ward 65C Compact Combination Thin Section Trim Saw/Grinder which is commonly used, particularly for making thin sections of sedimentary rocks.  It’s function, is to cut rocks which are then mounted onto glass slides and subsequently ground down to the required 30 micron thickness of the thin section. The thin section is finally, hand finished using silicon carbide powder-grit.
