Foundation in Engineering and Science Department Debate Competition
Posted date:5 November 2015 – The Foundation in Engineering and Science Department organised a debate competition with the theme “Innovation in Science and Engineering”. The main objective of the competition was to encourage critical and creative thinking among the students. In debating, effort is made to examine every side of important and controversial issues in an atmosphere of reasoned argument and respectful discourse. All participants who registered for the competition were trained for the debate by Mr. Mellvyn Mitchell who is a lecturer and debating enthusiast.
The motion for the final round of competition was “This House would start drilling the Arctic and Antarctic for oil”. The adjudicators were the Dean of Faculty of Engineering and Science, Professor Michael Cloke, Ms Serina Ann Doss and Dr Amandeep S. Sidhu. Both the proposition and opposition teams put up an exciting verbal sparring, making it a tough job for the adjudicators to decide the winners. Representing the Government team were Gibson Tan Yao Sheng, Alvin F Mpinyuri and Dip Saha. The Opposition team was represented by Praween A/L Sarawanan, Mohamed Mohamoud Hawadleh and Kevin Kesulai Anak Bansa. The Opposition team emerged as the winner. They won a prize hamper that was worth RM 200.
Gibson Tan Yao Sheng won the first prize: RM 800, Praween A/L Sarawanan won the second prize: RM 500 and Mohamed Mohamoud Hawadleh won the third prize: RM 300.
The teams, winners and participants were congratulated by the Dean of Faculty of Engineering and Science, Professor Michael Cloke and the Head of Department for Foundation in Engineering and Science, Mr Foad Motalebi, who said it was a great learning opportunity for the students.
We would like to thank the organising committee members (Ms Lai Zhenyue, Mr Suresh Reuben Balakrishnan, Ms Natallee Faith Kwan, Ms Nong Nurnie and Mr Jason Chia), headed by Mr Foad Motalebi.
