On the 9th and 10th April of year 2012, Curtin University Mechanical Engineering Club (CUMEC) had conducted a site visit to Bintulu, Sarawak. The two industrial sites that CUMEC visited were Kidurong Natural Gas Power Plant, Sarawak Energy and Kirana Sdn. Bhd. Palm Oil Refinery plant at Kidurong Industrial zone.

The 600MW Kidurong Natural Gas Power Plant consists of 6 units of 45MW open cycle gas turbines and a combine cycle block with 2 units of 105MW Gas Turbines on a 105MW steam turbine. Participants visited the admin building, transmission house, all the gas turbines and their control rooms, the pressure relieving station, the combine cycle power plant as well as the main control room.

The main businesses of Kirana Palm Oil Refinery Sdn. Bhd. are to produce crude kernel oil from the palm kernel and to process Crude Palm Oil (CPO) into refined, bleached, and deodorized olein (RBDPO) as well as refined, bleached, and deodorized stearin (RBDPS). With the processing capacity 1200 metric tons of CPO, Kirana Palm Oil Sdn. Bhd. exports its products to China and other countries in Europe. Throughout the meeting, the participants had visited the kernel crushing and processing units, CPO refinery unit as well as witnessing the construction of the new refinery unit next to the existing one.

Both visited sites had shown different job perspectives and field of specialization of mechanical engineering. It was an excellent exposure to our club members as well as Curtin University Sarawak’s Mechanical Engineering students.
