Curtin Sarawak academic elected Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers, UK

Miri – 14 October 2014 – Associate Professor Dr Michael K. Danquah of the Department of Chemical Engineering, School of Engineering and Science of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) was recently elected a Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE), United Kingdom.

Individuals who receive the distinguished honour of becoming IChemE Fellows are awarded based on their ability to illustrate a significant contribution to the chemical engineering profession, and effectively demonstrate a combination of technical excellence and leadership of their peers.

They are viewed as influential and experienced individuals who are impacting change and showcasing significant responsibilities within the profession.

Dr. Danquah, who was also recently awarded the distinction of Chartered Engineer and Chartered Scientist, completed his doctorate in Biochemical Engineering from Monash University, Australia after obtaining a bachelors degree (First Class) in Chemical Engineering from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, Ghana.

Prior to joining Curtin Sarawak in 2012, Dr. Danquah was a senior lecturer in the Department of Chemical Engineering and the Principal Research Fellow of the Bio Engineering Laboratory, Faculty of Engineering, Monash University.

He has won many other accolades, including the 2013 IChemE Innovator of the Year (shortlisted candidate in Malaysia); 2012 TR35@Singapore Outstanding Young Innovator in Asia and Pacific Regions Award; finalist of the World Technology Award for Biotechnology (2012); IChemE Highly Commended in Bioprocessing Award (2010); Monash Distinguished Early Career Alumni Award (2008); and AUSBIOTECH (Australian Biotechnology Organisation) Award of Excellence in Biotechnology (2006).

Dr. Danquah, who is also the Associate Dean of Research and Development at Curtin Sarawak, has contributed significantly to the field of chemical and biological engineering where he utilises biomolecular and cellular engineering and interactions to enhance the detection, prevention and treatment of infectious diseases; develop environmental bioremediation systems; and produce sustainable biofuels and fine chemicals.

The IChemE is a global professional membership organisation for individuals with relevant experience and interest in chemical engineering. It aims to build and sustain an active international professional network of chemical engineers, and engage with others to promote the development and use of chemical engineering.

In addition, IChemE also provides support to individuals and groups within the domain of chemical engineering, enabling chemical engineers to effectively interact and communicate with one another.
