Curtin Sarawak Chemical Engineering students named winners of 2015 UniSim Design Student Challenge for Europe and Asia
Posted date:Miri – 9 December 2015 – Honeywell Process Solutions announced in Madrid, Spain recently that four students from Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) have been named winners of the annual Honeywell UniSim® Design Student Challenge, which is designed to challenge students to solve real-world problems facing industrial processing plants.
Engineering students Lee Ren Jie, Lim Shih Chiang, Sam Tze Mun and Loo Ying Ting showcased their winning submission to more than 1,000 attendees at the 2015 Honeywell Users Group (HUG) EMEA Conference in Madrid.
The students’ project detailed improvements that could be made to the energy efficiency of gas processing plants, by retrofitting natural gas liquid fractionation trains using an innovative self-heat recuperative process. This solves a very real issue, which is increasing the efficiency of natural gas and gas liquids plants is critical globally as the energy industry struggles to keep up with consumer and commercial demand.
“The students from Curtin University have approached a familiar industry issue in a totally fresh and creative way,” said Ali Raza, vice president and general manager of Honeywell Process Solutions’ Advanced Solutions business.
“Their retrofit solution has the potential to save plant operators millions of dollars every year. It is bright and commercially viable ideas such as this from tomorrow’s process industry leaders that we aim to inspire every year through this competition.”
Honeywell’s UniSim Design Student Challenge seeks to recognise some of the most talented engineering students around the world. It challenges students to solve real-world problems facing industrial processing plants by using Honeywell’s UniSim Design process simulation and design software, which is used by manufacturers throughout the globe. Winners earn the chance to present their research projects to many of the world’s top manufacturers, and potential employers, at HUG.
Honeywell’s UniSim Design Suite provides an interactive process model that allows engineers to create steady-state and dynamic models and is used extensively for plant design, performance monitoring, troubleshooting, operational improvement, business planning, and asset management around the world. UniSim Design models may be leveraged into advanced training and optimisation solutions provided by the UniSim Operations and UniSim Optimization suites.
