JamesDyson-640x448

Mechanical Engineering Department is calling for all undergraduates, postgraduate and fresh graduate to participate in the James Dyson Award 2012, an international design competition run in 18 countries, organised by the James Dyson Foundation.

The award requires students to ‘design something that solves a problem’. The James Dyson Award will be presented to the student whose work best demonstrates the ability to think differently and create a much needed product that works better. The judges will be looking for a project that:

  • demonstrates a significant and practical purpose, offering real benefits to the end user
  • is ideally a working prototype
  • is designed with sustainability in mind
  • is commercially viable

You may participate in the competition individually or in team. To enter the award, you would need to register with the James Dyson Award official website, check you eligibility and prepare your entry as required below:

  • Three paragraphs in both English and your mother tongue if different, covering the function, inspiration and development of your product.
  • Up to 10 images showing the development process of your design: early sketches, rudimentary prototypes, detailed CAD renderings, and the finished product on a white background (up to 3 Mb each).
  • A video up to three minutes long (uploaded via YouTube) showing your development journey and ideally a prototype in action. This is strongly recommended, but not mandatory.
  • Proof of Eligibility – Official documentation to prove you studied (having graduated within four years) or are studying an engineering or design subject at university in a participating country. Word documents, PDF and JPEGS are accepted.

The closing date of the competition is 2nd of August 2012, Midnight, British Summer Time. For more information about the award, please refer to James Dyson Award official website.

The Mechanical Engineering Department will run an internal competition to support students in preparing their entries for the James Dyson Award. For more information, please refer to Internal Competition for James Dyson Award Entries.
