Background

Dr. Sharul’s primary research interests are in fundamentals of turbulent flows, unsteady flows, vortex dynamics and hydrodynamics instability with applications relating to vehicle aerodynamics, wind effects on buildings and special structures, flow assurances, pipe network flows as well as renewable energy. There is also a strong interest on turbulence measurements, flow visualization techniques and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). These studies provide engineers insight into the development of Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAVs), rotors, as well as the design and operation of crude oil pipeline flows, gas turbines and even heat exchangers in highly unsteady inflow conditions.

Dr. Sharul completed his Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering from Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN). He then left for Canada and received his Masters degree from the University of Western Ontario. During that time, he worked on vortex shedding suppression from a rotating circular cylinder at the Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel Laboratory (BLWTL). Intrigued by fundamental of flow physics, he pursued with his PhD study on Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) investigation of pulsatile flow over a backward-facing step at the University of Calgary under the scholarship of Talisman Energy Inc., awarded to outstanding PhD candidate whose research focuses on the advancement of environmentally, socially and economically responsible provision of energy, challenges and opportunities faced by the oil and gas industry. During this period Dr. Sharul was a key member of Advanced Fluid Mechanics and Biofilm Engineering Research Groups.
