Academic History

Raoof Gholami is a geomechanical engineer in Department of Petroleum Engineering at Curtin University. He accomplished his BSc in Mining Engineering as the top level student and immediately started his MSc in Mining Applied Engineering in Department of Mining, Petroleum and Geophysics at Shahrood University as one of the top 20 students in national examination. He was the top ranked student in national examination to peruse his PhD at Shahrood University and has been involved in geomechanical related projects ever since. He joined Curtin University one year before accomplishing his PhD and is an active lecturer and researcher in department of Petroleum Engineering in the field of drilling and geomechanics.

Industrial Working Experience and Collaboration

  • Four years close working experience with Iranian Offshore Oil Company (IOOC) in seismic data processing and geomechanical evaluations of offshore fields. In this project, logs, VSP and 2D seismic data of one of the offshore fields in south of Iran was analyzed through conventional processing steps. Different elastic and mechanical parameters of the subsurface layers were estimated by considering Vertical Transverse Isotropic (VTI) condition. A new approach was developed in this project and part of the results is about to be published in Journal of Applied Geophysics.
  • Two years of close working experience with National Iranian South Oil Company (NISOC) in casing collapse investigations of onshore field due to depletion. In this project, the reason of frequent collapse of the casings in the wellbores in a carbonate reservoir located in south part of Iran was evaluated. The possible reasons of previously performed studies were salt creep and fault reactivation. During this study, it was revealed that depletion is the most likely phenomenon causing the collapse to happen. In fact, it was found that due to the crossing a fault, rock’s properties have been changed significantly in the foot wall and hanging wall of the fault. Thus, as the depletion took place, shear failure, solid production and buckling of the casing were observed.
  • Two years of close working experience with National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) in wellbore stability analysis of an onshore field with sanding potential. In this project, conventional procedure of the wellbore stability analysis was revised and a new approach for determination of elastic and mechanical parameters as well as in-situ stresses was proposed. The wellbore stability of the well located in south-west of Iran was analyzed. The situation of this well was far more complicated than conventional situation due to high pore pressure and solid production of the reservoir.
